yesterday i got the call. you know the one, the one you dread. the one where the school receptionist is telling you your child fell off the monkey bars, is crying and might have a broken arm.
oh crap!
so off i go and sure enough he is hurt. badly.
i rush him to our pedi and after xrays and a 1.5 hour waiting room wait because after xrays our pedi is in a meeting and can't be disturbed {yes, the lack of compassion gets worse & we will be finding a new one...} we finally see our pedi again and he's convinced it's fine. bruised and tender, but fine.
no. it's not. trust me and my mama instincts, he wouldn't still be crying or screaming in agony when they twist his elbow during the xray if he was fine.
always ask for a second opinion.
those are the lessons i've learned with maddie bean's issues, always. always ask for a second opinion.
we're sent home, with a sling but no brace because the pedi is adamant that he's fine & they're not going to do anything more than put him in a cloth sling. but... low and behold, half an hour later i get the call that the second opinion sees an elbow fracture and that some of the tissue has ripped away from the bone.
this was the moment when i wanted to yell really loudly I TOLD YOU SO!!
so back we go to the pedi for a temp brace and some drugs for the pain.
my poor little man. he was so brave. all. day. long. he cried almost all afternoon long but he was so, so, so brave.
today we see the ortho who i hear is amazing.
always ask for a second opinion. always.
Oh poor little guy! I hope he heals quickly. And yes that is a call we all hate to get from the school! Hang in there Mama and always trust those "mom" instincts! HUGS!

Yes, always, always ask. Fortunately I have a best friend who is a pediatric nurse and answers her phone 24/7. Speedy healing to the little one--and good on you KL for trusting your motherly instincts. ♥

Sometimes you just know. I hope he feels better soon. We got the call with my son 8 years ago - greenstick fracture in his arm. Red cast for Christmas. Last year I got the call for my daughter. Walked into the school and knew immediately. Wrapped her arm in a magazine with an icepack and went to the emergency room. Floored by the fact that the teacher sent my child into the school by herself to go to the office. Both bones broken. Few days later she had a brand new 6" titanium rod in her arm. We now have a favorite orthopedic surgeon. (BTW - advil slows the bone growth.)

Oooo poor little one...! I'm glad you got the second opinion and you are SO right. My son broke his leg when he was 3 years old and because he complained about the FOOT hurting, because he was 3 years old and that was what he was feeling, they only x-rayed the stupid foot!
When we went back the next day because he couldn't move at all without A LOT of pain they x-rayed the whole leg, and found that it was broken... Luckily he wasn't in pain when he was still, so that extra night wasn't too bad. But totally and completely unnecessary.
Good luck with everything...!
